The Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) system provides energy saving heat recovery ventilation via a new heat exchanger with high temperature and enthalpy recovery efficiency. Four ERV systems were installed in the residence building.
The ranges in each resident neighborhood automatically shut off after two hours ensuring it is not left running unintentionally. The Denlar residential style range hoods are complete with a fire suppression system.
Clock boxes were installed to track the time the kitchen are in use. They automatically shut of the range after two hours to ensure it is not left running unintentionally.

Home Utilizes Dozen of Manufacturers to Complete Mechanical System
O’Connor Company and G & R Controls. Rapid City, SD, designed and implemented an extraordinarily large mechanical system for the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD.
The State Veterans Home began working in early 2014 to build a new 145,000 square foot residence building and needed a mechanical system to match the size and scope of the building. The O’Connor Company and G & R Controls team supplied the HVAC and hydronic equipment, as well as the building automation system for the project, while Balancing Professionals balanced the building upon completion.
In addition to the rooftop units and controls in the residence building, a biomass boiler plant was added to provide heat to all buildings on the campus, not just the new residence building.
The wood-chip fed Hurst Biomass Boiler is the main boiler, but the plant also contains a Scotch Marine Boiler as a backup. The custom Hurst Boilers are controlled by Hurst factory controls on the units.
The biomass boiler runs very efficiently and emits nearly zero pollution. The Electrostatic Precipitator manufactured by PPC Industries, collects any remaining pollutants before being exhausted through the stack. However, there is so little being emitted, it cannot be measured with even the most sensitive instruments.
The residence building is complete with recreation and therapy facilities, post office, barber shop, mini mart and chapel. Each resident wing is divided into neighborhoods which each have a common area with a kitchen.
